Improving Tableau Adoption for Non-Technical Users

200+ users can now access data more easily through a simplified Tableau experience.

Fewer dashboard adjustments needed, as users can explore data themselves with flexible, Excel-like tables.

MailScheduler will play a key role in scaling communication by automatically distributing thousands of reports.

The Challenge

As Dylan Kuehl and his team transitioned from a legacy BI tool to Tableau, their goal was clear: improve Tableau adoption for non-technical users and establish a single version of the truth.

At First Supply, data is used company-wide, from sales and operations to warehouse, transportation, and customer service teams. However, enabling such a diverse group of users to interact effectively with data posed challenges. Not everyone is data-savvy, and navigating dashboards could be overwhelming.

In addition, onboarding new users required significant time and effort, involving training sessions, follow-ups, and ongoing support. At the same time, the company needed a scalable way to distribute insights to users who didn’t require full dashboard access, while still moving toward their goal of a single source of truth.

Implementation and Team Adoption

To address these needs, the team introduced SuperTables and recently added WriteBackExtreme and MailScheduler.

SuperTables provides a simple, intuitive way for non-technical users to explore data in an Excel-like format without needing advanced Tableau skills.

Building on this, WriteBackExtreme will support large-scale data access, enabling users to work with millions of rows of data more efficiently.

MailScheduler will play a key role in scaling communication by automatically distributing thousands of reports, ensuring the right information reaches the right people in the exact format they need.

“SuperTables truly fills the gap by giving non-technical users access to their own data. Everything is super easy and straightforward to navigate.”

Dylan Kuehl, Business Intelligence Manager at First Supply

Empowering Self-Service Data Exploration

One of the biggest breakthroughs came from enabling users across the organization to explore data independently.

SuperTables makes data accessible for non-technical users by bringing an intuitive, Excel-like experience into Tableau. It allows users, especially in sales and operations, to explore and customize data themselves using filters, grouping, and flexible field selection. This reduces the need for constant dashboard adjustments and enables teams to quickly access the information they need without extensive training or complex interaction.

Scaling Insights Effortlessly

As usage continues to grow to close to 300 users, First Supply is preparing to scale access even further. With MailScheduler, the team aims to deliver insights directly to users who don’t require full dashboard access, while ensuring they still receive timely, relevant information.

At the same time, WriteBackExtreme will support more advanced use cases involving large volumes of data. Together, these solutions will help the team expand Tableau adoption without increasing complexity or maintenance.

Conclusion

By extending Tableau with the right Premium Viz Extensions, First Supply has made significant progress toward its vision of a single source of truth, treating data as an asset across the organization. By combining intuitive data exploration with scalable distribution and performance capabilities, First Supply is building a strong foundation for data-driven decision-making.

SuperTables has already transformed how users interact with data, while MailScheduler and WriteBackExtreme support the next stage of growth. MailScheduler, in particular, plays a key role in scaling communication by automatically distributing thousands of reports, ensuring the right information reaches the right people in the exact format they need. Together, these solutions make data more accessible, efficient, and impactful for every user.

Today, with over 200 users and growing toward 300, data is no longer limited to specialists; it has become a shared resource that supports better decisions across the entire business.
