Iron Vizzy Spotlight: Chinouk Brings Travel Memories to Life in an Interactive Dashboard.

An Iron Vizzy travel dashboard that keeps memories.

Chinouk approached the Iron Vizzy challenge with a personal and creative goal. She wanted a dashboard that could collect travel memories in one interactive dashboard. Inspired by her own experiences when using apps and similar dashboards online, she built a tool that combines maps, visualizations, and forms to create a clear overview of her journeys.

Travel Dashboard

A dashboard built for memories.

The primary aim of Chinouk’s dashboard is to track and visualize travel experiences. Similar to apps like Polarsteps, the dashboard keeps all her travel memories organized in one place. The interactive nature allows not only tracking past trips but also adding new destinations over time. The dashboard is designed so that others could use it as a template for their own travel memories.

Inspiration and the design process.

Chinouk drew inspiration from existing aviation and travel dashboards online. From there, she collected her own travel data, which took some time to organize.

She began with a world map showing travel routes and gradually added additional visualizations to give broader insights into her journeys. WriteBackExtreme was incorporated to allow the addition of new trips and maintain an up-to-date overview. The final step involved refining the look and feel, choosing the right colors, fonts, and visuals such as arrows and a passport icon to enhance the travel theme.

Building a clear and interactive experience.

The process began with a simple concept: map the travels and show the routes taken. Over time, more elements were added to visualize travel data from different perspectives. Although Chinouk discovered a more efficient way to add locations using WriteBackExtreme’s mapping tool, time constraints meant she could not redo the work. This experience became a valuable learning point for future dashboards.

Extensions that supported the goal.

WriteBackExtreme is at the heart of Chinouk’s dashboard. It stores data and allows new entries to be added seamlessly. Using a form, users can input the necessary information, which then generates points on the map and updates the other visualizations automatically. This combination of mapping and interactivity creates a complete and dynamic travel overview

Choosing visualizations for clarity and insight.

Chinouk wanted more than just lines connecting destinations on a map. Additional visualizations provide broader insights and make filtering easier. This approach helps create a full picture of travels at a glance, highlighting patterns and connections across journeys.

A dashboard for continued use.

The dashboard process helped Chinouk deepen her understanding of Tableau and WriteBackExtreme. Beyond gaining the technical knowledge, she enjoyed creating a personal tool that captures her memories in one organized dashboard. The experience also demonstrated the flexibility of extensions and their potential for a variety of use cases.

Chinouk plans to continue using the dashboard to track her travels. It now serves as a central place for her memories, combining visualization, interactivity, and personal storytelling in one accessible format.
